LAKE WARAMAUG
LAKE
WARAMAUG
This waterfront estate was conceived as a multi-generational retreat—a place for a New York City-based family to gather. The expansive grounds invite relaxation and recreation, and the home was designed to be as comfortable for empty-nesters to use as a regular weekend escape as it is during extended stays with the clients’ grown children, their future families, and the clients’ own aging parents.
The home was envisioned to capture sweeping views of Lake Waramaug—Connecticut’s second-largest lake—from nearly every room, balancing a modern sensibility with a rustic spirit. The interiors are a welcoming hub for all, anchored by a generous living room overlooking the water. Used year-round, the warm palette and modern lines make it welcoming in all four seasons. As serious cooks, the kitchen was thoughtfully designed to support memorable meals shared indoors or on the covered porch.
Architecturally, the building nods to the region’s agricultural vernacular, drawing inspiration from barns while juxtaposing large expanses of glass that frame the landscape. Exterior materials—reclaimed barn siding, metal roofing, and elemental rooflines—define its character, while the interior introduces more modernist elements, including exposed structural steel and whitewashed barn wood in the main living spaces.
